What is Upcycling?
Upcycling is the process of transforming something used and unwanted into something bespoke and original. Many things get better with age. Classic cars, quality clothes and antique furniture all become ever more lovely as the decades roll past. One thing is for sure, old furniture was made to last and it’s certainly a shame to see unwanted items sentenced to their landfill death, due to a little wear and tear.
Upcycled furniture is eco-friendly because it reduces the consumption of new raw materials when creating new products, which in turn, reduces energy usage, air and water pollution and even greenhouse emissions.
Upcycling what you already have, gives you an alternative to plain old mass produced high street furniture. It also gives you the freedom to choose any colour and any finish too, creating that perfect unique piece of furniture for your home.
Do you have an old piece of furniture, from the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s for instance? Maybe it has been passed down though the generations and it has some sentimental value too? Problem is with modern design, these old items don’t always sit well with your Decor or your current style, so instead of sitting in your Living room, they are sitting in your Garage gathering dust. This, of course is a waste of good craftsmanship and history. Have you ever thought about upcycling this item? Start by creating a mood board – gathering colours, style and textures that you love and putting them together. Next – imagine these ideas on your piece of furniture and decide where it can be placed in your home to compliment your current interior. Maybe you like the industrial look, but your furniture is Pine? Or are you a fan of Shabby Chic and would like a beach house feel in your home? Whatever it is that you like, go for it!
